NATCHEZ, Miss. – The public pool being built at Liberty Park is expected to be ready May 28, just in time for the start of the summer season.

As the pool approaches its Memorial Day opening, lifeguards and other pool attendants are being recruited, said YMCA Natchez director Alice Agner, whose organization will manage the aquatic center.

This will provide Natchez-Adams County a public facility it hasn’t had since the Duncan Park pool closed nearly two decades ago.

The city Board of Aldermen joined the county Board of Supervisors last year to come up with the money for the aquatic center’s construction. The pool is costing about $838,000 to build. An adjacent structure for concessions and restrooms is priced at about $500,000.

The competition-size pool has a shallow part on the side for wading separated from the larger section for swimming. The pool is seven feet at its deepest.

Construction began in October for the swimming pool near the Liberty Park ballfield and Natchez High School. A ceremonial groundbreaking took place in 2016, but work was delayed when construction costs exceeded what was originally budgeted.

There has been no public swimming pool in Natchez-Adams County since the city-owned Duncan Park pool closed around 2001.
