NATCHEZ, Miss – The YMCA’s contract has expired for managing Natchez-Adams County’s recreation programs and county supervisors aren’t sure yet about renewing it.

They said Monday more information is needed on what the Y’s plans are for the community’s sports offerings, ballfields and parks with taxpayers’ dollars given to the private organization.

“There’s really a lot of questions out there I don’t understand,” said county Supervisor Mike Lazarus.

County board president Calvin Butler said YMCA officials should meet with the supervisors, city aldermen, Mayor Darryl Grennell and the Natchez-Adams County Recreation Commission. The contract the Y has with Natchez-Adams County expired in March, said recreation commission member Jimmy Ware.

For recreation program operations, the county board annually allocates $334,000 to combine with $550,000 from the city board for the recreation commission to appropriate. Much of that is paid to the suburban Jackson-based Metropolitan YMCAs of Mississippi.

Regional YMCA executive Jara Miller and Natchez director Faye Minor did meet in February with the county board after members complained that the recreation administrators weren’t being accountable about how the publicly funded sports programs and facilities are being managed.

The new community pool is the most conspicuous operation run by the Y. For its construction and June 2018 opening, the two boards joined in coming up with the $1.3 million for the Liberty Park aquatic center.

The city-owned Duncan Park golf course and tennis courts are not under the Y’s auspices. County supervisors on Monday questioned what role the organization has in the youth baseball programs at the park.
