NATCHEZ, Miss. – City crews next week will begin picking up bulky trash such as junked furniture and yard rubbish taken to curbs by residents as part Natchez’ annual spring cleanup.

City residents wanting to dispose such items – which normally aren’t taken by the city garbage collector -- can phone the Natchez Public Works Department to schedule a pickup. Call 601 445-6652. The special-collection period is Monday until April 27. The annual community cleanup will culminate that Saturday morning with people gathering at Natchez’ Memorial Park on Main and Rankin streets to disburse throughout downtown neighborhoods to pick up litter.

There will also be two temporary trash drop-off locations April 27 for bulky trash. The city’s contracted trash collector – Arrow Disposal Service – will have garbage trucks to accept the rubbish at Martin Luther King and Minor streets and Liberty Park.

Large items to discard can include sofas, washing machines and limbs. Household hazardous materials such as paint or gas cans are excluded.

April 22 is the annual Earth Day that’s recognized around the world to raise awareness for protecting the environment.
