Concordia Parish Health unit offering free flu shots through Feb. 12
from The Concordia Sentinel
February 8, 2018 -

The Concordia Parish Health Unit is offering free flu shots through Feb. 12 to all who visit the office at 905 Mickey Gilley Avenue, Ferriday.

The health unit is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The service is part of a statewide effort by the Louisiana Department of Health Office of Public Health to provide flu vaccines at no cost to anyone who has not yet received a flu vaccine this year.

“Louisiana is experiencing a severe flu season and the flu strain we are seeing now is one that typically causes more severe illness, and results in higher hospitalization rates and deaths,” said Dr. Frank Welch, state immunization medical director. “In more severe seasons, the flu causes approximately 700 deaths and nearly 8,000 hospitalizations each year in Louisiana. We are already on track to meet and possibly exceed these statistics for the 2017/18 flu season.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Louisiana Department of Health recommend a yearly flu shot for everyone over six months of age who does not have a complicating condition, such as a prior allergic reaction to the flu shot.

Concordia Parish School Superintendent Whest Shirley said Tuesday that 11 percent of the student population was out on Jan. 19 but by Feb. 6 the percentage had dropped to 7 percent.

Riverland Medical Center Administrator Billy Rucker said this morning that there were 19 patients in the Ferriday hospital today with some suffering from the flu.
