Advances in DNA technology aid in arrest for 2002 rape

(Concordia Sentinel) — A Concordia Parish man was placed under a $40,000 bond Monday after being booked last week for a rape that occurred in 2002.

Judge John Reeves set the bond.

Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) spokesman Vernon Stevens said that Rusty Fitt, 39, 1716 Boggy Bayou Road, was charged with forcible rape on Jan. 26.

“The actual rape occurred in 2002 and was investigated back then,” Stevens said. “A DNA sample was taken at that time and sent to CODIS (Combined DNA Index System), but there was no match back then.”

Stevens said Fitt was picked up in October 2016 as part of a probation process. At that time, his DNA was entered with CODIS.

“CODIS sent back notice that Fitt was likely a suspect in the 2002 rape,” Stevens said. “We got a warrant to get new DNA for testing purposes and sent in a secondary sample. It came back positive.”

Based on that, Fitt was picked up last week, Stevens said.
