NATCHEZ, Miss. — Thursday afternoon, the Natchez-Adams County School Board held their weekly meeting that quickly devolved into chaos as racial tensions boiled.

School board member Phillip West asserted that the community had racial motivations in opposing the board’s efforts to borrow money for a new high school.

West pointed out that while 91 percent of the black community supported the vote, 91 percent of the white community opposed the vote. He also stated that 90 percent of the children who attend public schools in Adams County are African American.

“While some have legitimate concerns, the driving force – regardless of your attitude – is based on the racial composition of the students depending on public education. I’m ashamed of this mindset after 50 years,” West said. “The evidence shows exactly what I am talking about is fact.”

As one attendee of the meeting shouted, “We’re not racist,” West responded “Yeah, you’re not racist – you’re just taking racist actions.”

The meeting quickly escalated into a shouting match between West and the public attendees. | © 2014 | All Rights Reserved
