NATCHEZ, Miss. – City aldermen are providing $5,000 for a Natchez gathering aimed at promoting racial unity.

“Harmony in the Park” will take place April 20, the Saturday before Easter, at Jack Waite Park. Natchez Mayor Darryl Grennell said the city will pay for musicians, food and other concessions for the festival.

The Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday to allocate $5,000 for the event.

The board on Tuesday also approved a $1,000 allocation for another event sponsored by the local gay community. Grennell said the “Y’all Means All” event is being organized by Natchez lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders.

The money for the upcoming LGBT five-day event is coming from city funds the board has set aside to promote Natchez. This helps support various Natchez events, such as the annual balloon race, Juneteenth and the European car show.

The money for “Harmony in the Park” is from the community development account Magnolia Bluffs Casino funds for leasing city-owned land it occupies by the Mississippi River.

Jack Waite Park is located on McCabe Street between East Franklin and St. Catherine streets.
