Bridge work may be finished by August
from The Concordia Sentinel
November 30, 2017 -

Blastec Company project manager Theo Mamouzlous said he expects work on the old Mississippi River bridge to be completed by August of 2018.

"If the weather cooperates, we should have the bridge open by July of next year and completed by August," Mamouzlous said.

Mamouzlous said workers have completed all the blasting and have about a quarter of the bridge remaining for the finishing coat.

"We should be done with the painting by February or March," Mamouzlous said. "Then we will turn it over to Pistecky Steel Contractors to work on brackets for the lockdown bars and to change out lynch pins which hold the truss bars together."

Mamouzious said his company is also going to replace the current bridge lights with LED lighting.

"We took 60 percent of the floodlights out because on the older bridge there is more vibration," Mamouzious said. "The new lights should save the City of Vidalia $32,000 a year compared to what Energy is using now."

Vidalia pays for the electricity on the new bridge.

Mamouzious said Mississippi Department of Transportation and the federal government are paying for the work being done on the bridge.

The old bridge was closed on July 11 and the new bridge has been turned into a two-lane bridge with traffic going both ways.

A tarp has been installed in the center of the bridge to contain some of the sand being used that is being recycled back into the pump.

Mamouzious said most of the wrecks on the single bridge now happen mostly because people are rubbernecking.

"And a lot of them are watching us," he said.
