LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University Department of Athletics is teaming with the Alcorn School of Nursing to gather items to donate to students impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

Alcorn is calling all students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members to pitch-in and donate. The most needed items are non-perishable foods and toiletries.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by Hurricane Harvey. We have a strong alumni base in Houston, and many of our students have families who were affected by the storm," said director of athletics Derek Horne. "Athletics is more than just about winning and losing games. We strive to make an impact on the lives of students, and offer support to those in need. Right now is a time for us to focus on those who were impacted the most."

Items can be dropped off at Gate 11 before Alcorn football home games against McNeese State on Sept. 16 and Southern on Sept. 23. Other drop off locations including the Alcorn School of Nursing on Natchez (15 Campus Drive, Natchez, MS 39120) and the Alcorn Vicksburg Campus (3505 Pemberton Square Blvd, Suite 5, Vicksburg, MS 39180).

"This is an opportunity for Alcorn to stand Brave Strong with college students in Houston. Like Rabbi Hillel once said, 'If not us, who? If not now, when?' We blessed to be a blessing to others," said director of graduate nursing programs Janelle R. Baker, who took the initiative to begin the relief effort at Alcorn. "Hopefully someone in Florida, my home state, will do the same for college students statewide who were impacted by Hurricane Irma."

Non-perishable foods/items that can be donated include bottle water, juice boxes, variety pack of chips, snack pack peanuts, granola bars, saltine crackers, spam, Vienna Sausages, beef jerky, peanut butter, fruit cups, boxed raisings, cereal, canned vegetables, plastic silverware, paper plates and napkins/paper towels.

Toiletries that can be donated are not limited to hand sanitizer, tooth brushes, tooth paste, mouthwash, dental floss, liquid shower gels/soaps, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, lotion, feminine products, shaving gel, razors, Vaseline, hair combs/brushes, Clorox bleach/wipes and toilet paper.

"The very heart of the mission of the Alcorn School of Nursing is to prepare 'caring' healthcare providers 'through service'. As part of the mission, we embrace every opportunity to reach out to help others who are experiencing interruptions in their day-to-day activities and are having difficulty meeting their basic human needs," said dean and professor, school of nursing Debra G. Spring. "I am so proud of the tireless efforts in community service that Alcorn engages in, and the care and compassion exhibited by every nurse in the program as we work toward completing our mission." | © 2014 | All Rights Reserved
