BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana is inching toward the most restrictive abortion policy in the country.

The House criminal justice committee voted 9-8 Wednesday for a ban on abortion after 15 weeks that would only take effect after a legal battle over the same policy plays out in Mississippi.

Sen. John Milkovich sponsored the measure , saying he wants to see Louisiana outlaw all abortions. The Senate-approved bill moves next to the House floor.

Opponents say Louisiana should spend more time focusing on women's health instead of limiting abortions.

Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards has said he would sign a 15-week abortion ban into law.

Mississippi enacted a 15-week abortion ban in March. It was challenged by Mississippi's only abortion clinic and a federal judge put the law on hold.
