BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Louisiana's sheriffs could get 7 percent pay raises in 2020 under a bill that sailed through the Legislature and heads to the governor.

The pay raise bill is sponsored by Rep. Katrina Jackson, a Monroe Democrat. The increase is tied to requirements the sheriff complete educational or training requirements, such as having certain degrees or 20 years of law enforcement or military experience.

A financial analysis shows the pay hike would boost the average sheriff's salary to $172,911.

Senators gave final passage to the measure with a 36-1 vote Tuesday night.

Sen. Mack "Bodi" White, a Baton Rouge Republican, didn't mention salaries, focusing instead on requirements to reach the certification. No senators asked questions.

The House earlier backed the salary hike with a 79-9 vote.
