Trump Hotel brands coming to Mississippi
from Staff Reports - NEWS
June 6, 2017 -

A Mississippi family to bring a new brand of upscale hotel to the Delta.

Located in Cleveland, SCION at West End will be managed by Trump Hotels, in a partnership with Chawla Pointe LLC, a Mississippi company and hotelier family with 17 hotels in six cities in the Delta.

SCION at West End will be a multi-faceted hospitality campus that will feature approximately 100 rooms, suites and extended stay accommodations; a 6,000-square-foot spa and fitness center; a 5,000-square-foot event hall.

It's expected to open by Jan 2018.

In addition, Trump Hotels has three agreements signed for American IDEA properties in the Mississippi Delta area, according to the release.

American IDEA hotels will be an alternative, for both guests and hotel developers, looking for an answer to the run-of-the-mill offerings in the mid-scale space, the release stated.

Originally slated as Lyric Hotel and Spa, with an estimated cost of $8 million, the Cleveland project turned into the SCION at West End with a projected cost of $15 million after Suresh Chawla met with then presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Announcing the collaboration, Trump Hotels CEO Eric Danziger said in the release, “Trump Hotels is recognized for unparalleled service, meticulous attention to detail and iconic properties in world-class destinations."

The venture isn't the first time the families' paths have crossed.

In the mid 1980's, Chawla's father, Dr. V.K. Chawla, wrote a letter to Trump, asking for his financial help in opening his first hotel.

In response, Trump called Dr. Chawla at his Greenwood convenience store. Trump declined to help Chawla secure the necessary capital but suggested he apply for a Small Business Administration minority loan. Chawla opened his first hotel, a Comfort Inn, in 1989, according to the family's business website.

“We are proud to partner with the Trump Hotels team to bring the very first SCION hotel experience to life,” Dinesh Chawla, CEO, Chawla Pointe, LLC said in the release. “The team has been incredibly responsive and creative, and as our partners, they have been invaluable resources for us. We are excited to bring this exciting project to the Mississippi Delta area.”
