LSU faces Florida State in opening round of the CWS

June 16, 2017 -

Two teams playing outstanding baseball will meet on Saturday night in the opening round of the College World Series, when LSU faces Florida State. The Tigers have won 16 in a row, while the Seminoles have won 12 of their last 13.

On April 15, FSU was 21-15 overall, 7-9 in the ACC. But just like LSU, the Seminoles turned it on and they bring a 45-21 record into Omaha.

Out of the eight teams in the College World Series, Florida State has scored the most runs with 488. They've blasted 72 home runs, which is 11 more than what the Tigers have hit.

FSU is also very patient at the plate. They've walked 380 times, which is over 100 more times than LSU. Tigers starting pitcher Alex Lange leads the team in walks given up with 40, so expect the Seminoles to be patient on Saturday night. They are averaging five walks per game in the postseason.

Florida State's starting pitcher for Saturday is Tyler Holton. The sophomore left-hander is 10-2 with a 2.25 ERA. He has 139 strikeouts in 112 innings. In the regionals against Central Florida, he tossed a complete game victory, allowing one run and striking out 13. His best pitch is a circle change.

The Seminoles best hitter is third baseman Dylan Busby, who is hitting .315 with 14 home runs and 62 RBIs. He's a third round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Also keep an eye on sophomore left fielder Jackson Lueck. He's reached safely in 11 of his last 14 at bats. Lueck missed about a quarter of the season because of shin splints and shingles, but still leads the team with a .327 batting average.

And out of the eight teams left in the CWS, Florida State has the lowest fielding percentage. They have three players, including Busby, that have committed 10 or more errors. LSU does not have a single player who has 10 or miscues in the field.
