STARKVILLE, Miss. (Clarion-Ledger) — A quarterback competition that began in January with four quarterbacks is down to one.

Nick Tiano announced Wednesday that he will "explore my options to continue my education and football career outside of Mississippi State University."

Tiano joins Elijah Staley and Damian Williams who also announced this season they would no longer play for the Bulldogs.

Staley transferred to Tyler Junior College in August. Williams announced prior to the Egg Bowl that it would be his final regular season game with the program.

MSU coach Dan Mullen said after the Egg Bowl that he and Williams would discuss the quarterback's future. Mississippi State confirmed that Tiano is looking elsewhere but hasn't discussed options with any schools yet. He will travel with the team for a potential bowl game.

A source within the program said Tiano's decision is based on playing time. The redshirt freshman would like to play immediately which hints at a possible transfer to the FCS level.

Tiano is from Chattanooga, Tennessee, making UT-Chattanooga an obvious possible destination. The Mocs recruited Tiano out of high school.

The exodus from Starkville comes after Nick Fitzgerald solidified himself as the starter for the next two season. Fitzgerald posted three single-game performances that included 300 yards passing and 100 yards rushings. Johnny Manziel was the last SEC player to accomplish that feat in 2012 when he won the Heisman Trophy.

Fitzgerald also capped his season off with a strong performance in the Egg Bowl. He rushed for a school-record 258 yards with three touchdowns. He also threw for three more.

Tiano appeared in four games this season. He completed the only pass he attempted. It went for five yards.

Assuming both Tiano and Williams leave the program, Fitzgerald will return next season as the only quarterback with experience. He'll be joined by four-star freshman recruit Keytaon Thompson, who will enroll early at Mississippi State. Thompson will participate in spring practices while other recruits are still in high school following in the steps of Dak Prescott and Fitzgerald before him.

The Bulldogs also have Wyatt Roberts on the roster as a quarterback option. The star from "Last Chance U" joined Mississippi State last August.
