(Concordia Sentinel) — Ferriday, Vidalia, Delta Charter School, Monterey, Sicily Island and Block begin the road to a state championship Friday.

Ferriday High continues to be ranked No. 3 in Class 2A and will host a game Friday.

The Trojans are 20-6 on the season and host Capitol of Baton Rouge Friday.

Capitol, 7-21, is ranked No. 30.

The first-round playoff game is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. at Ferriday Junior High.

“It just depends on which team shows up," said Ferriday High head coach K.G. Watkins, "Sometimes they don’t takes things serious enough, and sometimes they take things too serious.”

Vidalia High, ranked No. 29 in Class 3A, travels to No. 4 Ville Platte Friday.

Ville Platte finished the season at 22-7.

Vidalia ended its regular season Friday with a 64-54 loss to Jena in Vidalia.

Jena led 17-13 after one period and 31-23 at halftime.

DeMikal McCoy led Vidalia with 18 points, while Demarco Brown added 13.

Viking head coach Robert Sanders missed the game because of a death in the family.

“Coach (Damus) Smith said we played pretty well and the guys fought to the end,” Sanders said.

Vidalia finished the regular season at 10-16.

“Things did not go the way we hoped for the regular season, but I’m hoping our guys are hungry enough to do something now,” Sanders said.

Delta Charter is ranked No. 19 in Class 1A and travels to No. 14 East Iberville.

The Storm are 9-22 on the season. East Iberville is 16-16.

Monterey is ranked No. 21 and will play at No. 12 Hicks.

Hicks finished its season at 17-19.

Monterey lost to Hicks 63-35 in the Hicks Tournament in November.

The Wolves will be without head coach Eric Richard, who was suspended for one game following an incident at Avoyelles Charter earlier this month when the Monterey team left the game with a few minutes left after the official made the Monterey cheerleaders get into the bleachers.

“Hicks has a very good team. very quick,” Richard said. “But I think we are a much better team now than we were back then. Having played there already will definitely help us.”

Monterey girls coach Cary Shively will coach the boys.

“We’ve coached together a long time, so it’s just a matter of the guys going out there and playing hard,” Richard said. “We are the underdog, so we’re going in with the attitude of nothing to lose. We played in one of the toughest districts in Class B, so our guys know what it’s like to face good competition.”

Sicily Island is ranked No. 1 in Class A.

The Tigers will host Oberlin Friday.

Sicily Island head coach Curtis Shavers said the game will be Friday at Sicily Island. Tip-off will be either at 6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m.

“We have to work with our opponent,” Shavers said. “Our guys are looking forward to the playoffs. We just have to be in the right mind set and put it together on the court.”

Block High is ranked No. 17 and will visit Oak Grove.
