NATCHEZ, Miss. – The Board of Aldermen decided Tuesday to see if it has the money to repave some Natchez streets. Alderman Felicia Irving urged the board to allocate $150,000 for this. The board opted to meet at a later date to discuss whether the city can afford it.

With the city being so financially distressed, aldermen haven't been able to resurface streets since 2016 after also doing so the three previous years. About $2 million was used from revenues Natchez receives from leasing city-owned land to Magnolia Bluffs Casino.

Since about $900,000 has already been tapped out of the casino lease fund this fiscal year for basic city operations, it’s uncertain if there’s enough for another round of street overlays. The board voted Tuesday to have a special meeting later for a financial review.

Alderman Sarah Carter Smith suggested city officials collaborate with Adams County supervisors, who have already earmarked nearly $2 million they’ve borrowed to pay for road-resurfacing projects starting in May throughout the county, including within the city. | © 2014 | All Rights Reserved
