BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana inmate has died following a fight with a fellow prisoner, according to the state Department of Corrections.
The inmate was involved in a fight with another inmate in his dormitory at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday and died shortly afterward, the department said in a statement.
Correctional officers making rounds discovered the fight and placed the surviving inmate in investigative segregation, according to the statement.
Possible criminal charges were pending the outcome of an investigation by the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Corrections Department, officials said. An autopsy was set for this week.
Neither of the inmates involved were identified.
The fatality was the second deadly fight among inmates at the prison in less than a month, The Advocate reported. An Aug. 17 altercation led to the death of inmate Kintad Phillips, one of four people convicted in the 1995 murder of former New Orleans Saints player Bennie Thompson’s toddler son, the child’s mother and her fiance, the newspaper said.
