BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Staff and students at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine nursed an injured owl back to health over the last two months and then released the recovered bird back into the wild.
WBRZ reports that the barred owl flew back into the wild on Friday after convalescing for two months from a severely broken wing.
“It’s just awesome. It feels awesome every time we release one. It’s such a great feeling to send them back where they belong,” said vet student Amy Crumlich who took part in the bird’s medical care.
Dr. Mark Mitchell, the school’s director, told the station that the injured bird was found in the wild and brought to the school. Mitchell said the bird’s injuries were probably the result of being hit by a car. The school performed surgery on the bird, and then Crumlich took care of the owl while it recovered inside a special flight cage.
Mitchell said he never gets tired of seeing the recovered birds going back to the wild even though he’s released hundreds of birds over his career.
“The 12-year-old boy inside me is always tickled pink,” he said.
