Officials from the U.S. Department of Education have given final approval for spending plans for $1.6 billion in emergency funding provided by the American Rescue Plan Act for Mississippi schools.
More than $543 million in additional funding from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund has been released to the Mississippi Department of Education following the approval Wednesday. Roughly $1.08 billion was disbursed to the state from the fund in March, officials said.
“We are grateful to the U.S. Department of Education for its significant investment of ESSER funds in Mississippi,” said State Superintendent Carey Wright. “These funds will enable our schools to innovate learning and build strong and enduring systems of support to meet the current and future needs of our students.”
In total, more than $3 billion in federal aid has been allocated to the state’s education department through the ESSER fund, the CARES Act and the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act. About $639.1 million in funding has been spent as of Sept. 30, according to federal data.
