BATON ROUGE – The largest free international music festival kicks off Wednesday night in Lafayette and after a two-year absence organizers of Festival International are tuning up for record-breaking crowds. Spokesperson Brad Cradeur says there’s plenty of anticipation for the five-day festival to get underway.
“I think with the outlook for the weather, and people just being excited about a premier festival around Acadiana, it’s going to be tons of fun,” said Cradeur.
For this year’s festival which features musical acts, crafts, and food from all over the globe, there’s a new cashless payment system. Cradeur says you can register for an account ahead of time on their website.
“And let’s say you have a $200 festival budget, you load that amount onto your bracelet, and at the end of the festival if you don’t use all those all of that fund it automatically goes back into your bank account,” said Cradeur.
If you’ve never attended the event Cradeur says it’s hard to explain in a few words just how distinctive the event is for Acadiana. He says he can’t think of any other place in the world where you can experience such a gamut of music in less than a tenth of a mile.
“And see a band from halfway around the world or somebody that you see on Friday night around the Acadiana area. It’s such a unique festival that’s been going on for thirty-something years now,” said Cradeur.
Festival International normally attracts up to 300,000 attendees over the five-day period but organizers expect to eclipse previous records in attendance this year.
