Natchez, MS – Arts Danu is delighted to host working artist and Savannah College of Art and Design professor Gerry Stecca as the first of our teaching artists in the Arts Danu Teaching Artist Residency Program. Stecca will be in Natchez from May 3rd – 17th, teaching classes, opening an exhibition at Conde Contemporary, and creating an installation of public art he will gift to the City.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Gerry Stecca attended San Diego Mesa College, seeking a degree in Biology. He later earned a BA in Visual Arts with a minor in Science from the University of California, San Diego in 1987. In 2015 he earned a Master in Fine Arts in painting from the Savannah College of Art & Design. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with architects and designers in the United States, the Caribbean, Canada and Spain. Some of these projects include a mural for Starbucks (Savannah, GA) and two murals in the Bahamas commissioned by Holland America/Carnival Cruise Line.
Stecca has exhibited with Jacob Karpio and Silvana Facchini Gallery, Diana Lowenstein Gallery, Hollywood Art Center, Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale and The Frost Museum of Art among others. Stecca’s work has been shown at Art Basel (Switzerland), Miami International Art Fair, Arts for a Better World and Overture Art Fairs.
His work can be found in private, corporate and public permanent collections such as the Courtauld East Wing (London, UK), University of Maine Museum of Art in Bangor (MA), Fort Smith Museum of Art (AR), Port Angeles Fine Arts Center (WA), Everett Community College (WA), Savannah College of Art and Design (GA), The Ballast Hotel (NC), The James Royal Hotel (Miami Beach) and Related Group (Trump Tower III in Sunny Isles, FL), etc.
Stecca resides and works in Savannah, GA and Miami (FL). He is a full time Foundations Professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Classes
As part of the residency our artists commit to teaching in the community for free. Our focus is on 8th – 10th grade students with an interest in art and a diagnosis / IEP of ADHD and / or Dyslexia, though all students 8th grade and above are welcome to apply.
Stecca will be teaching two classes on sculpture with “found” objects, hand picked by Stecca and distributed to participating students. The classes are May 6th & 7th from 10am-1pm at the Natchez Convention Center, and May 15th &16th from 3:30pm – 6:30pm at the Natchez Civic Center, with 12 students in each group.
