NATCHEZ, Miss. – The Mississippi Legislature has formally recognized the public service of former Natchez mayor Butch Brown, who died a year ago today.
In a resolution the state Senate and House of Representatives passed last month, lawmakers noted Brown “was a man of vision, and that and his undaunted energy brought many great changes to Natchez.”
Brown, who served 12 years as Natchez mayor, died at age 79 on April 25, 2023. Between his first two terms and final term as mayor, Brown was executive director of the Mississippi Department of Transportation for 10 years.
His three terms as mayor covered 1992 to 2000 and 2012 to 2016. His stint as MDOT executive director was from 2001 to 2011.
The state Legislature’s resolution mourns Brown’s death and commends his public service. The measure goes into much detail about his business and political career.
“To fully understand this complex man of many talents,” the resolution notes that Brown’s reelection campaign slogan was ‘I may not be perfect, but I get things done.’ And so he did.”
The resolution was co-sponsored by Sen. Albert Butler and Sen. Gary Brumfield, who represent parts of Natchez-Adams County. Senate Concurrent Resolution 504 can be read at the Legislature’s website: billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/documents/2024/pdf/SC/SC0504SG.pdf
Brown had been in ill health since hobbled by a stroke in 2015. Brown’s wife, Shields, died in November – just seven months after her husband’s death.
