In an exciting announcement, the City of Natchez, in collaboration with Visit Natchez and ArtsNatchez, has launched the “Natchez, Sunset Capital of the South” photo contest. This year-long event, starting from May 2024 to April 2025, is set to draw amateur photographers eager to capture the city’s renowned river bluff sunsets.
Supported by local physician Dr. Randy Tillman, the contest offers a substantial incentive: a monthly cash prize of $500. This initiative not only celebrates the natural beauty of Natchez but also highlights the city’s picturesque settings—from the glistening Mississippi River to its historic architecure.
Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We invite everyone to join us in celebrating Natchez’s stunning nightly spectacle through our Monthly ‘Sunset Capital of The South’ Photo Contest. It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase the creativity and talent of our community.”
Participants are encouraged to submit photos showcasing various aspects of Natchez at the Magic Sunset Hour, including the river, bridge, bandstand, Under the Hill, people, pets, events, aerial views, and more. By showcasing these diverse aspects of Natchez during the magical sunset hour, the contest aims to share the unique charm of the city with a wider audience.
Each month’s submissions will be evaluated by a panel selected by Arts Natchez, an organization committed to fostering creativity and cultural enrichment. While professional photographers can participate in showcasing their work, they are ineligible for the monetary rewards.
Leon Hollis, representing Arts Natchez, highlighted the dual benefit of the contest, saying, “Through this contest, we aim to highlight Natchez’s greatest asset—its stunning sunsets—and showcase the talent and creativity of our residents.”
Helen Moss Smith, President/Chair of Visit Natchez, also emphasized the positive impact of the contest, attributing its promise to Dr. Tillman’s support and ArtsNatchez’s involvement. She added, “Promoting Natchez in such a positive manner and showcasing our beautiful sunsets is a huge win for our city. We can’t wait to see how many submissions ArtsNatchez receives!”
