NATCHEZ, Miss. – Adams County supervisors have paid homage to James Biglane, the Natchez oilman and bank founder who died Monday.
The Board of Supervisors interrupted their Monday meeting to hold a moment of silence when news came of Biglane’s death.
“He was a really generous and good man,” said county board President Kevin Wilson.
“James Biglane was a legend in this community,” said Supervisor Wes Middleton, whose wife is a member of Biglane’s extended family. “His impact will be felt for a long time.”
The county board approved a formal resolution to be written praising the civic-minded banking leader and oil company executive, who was named the Natchezian of the Year by the Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce in 2013.
Biglane, 82, was president of the Natchez oil company his father D.A. Biglane founded, and he organized what’s now the only Natchez-based bank: United Mississippi Bank. He also led efforts for starting the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race, one of Natchez’ biggest annual events which generates revenues for the Historic Natchez Foundation.
“He’s been a name in the community ever since I can remember,” said Adams County Supervisor Warren Gaines.
