NATCHEZ, Miss. – The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians, is one step closer to gaining official recognition as an affiliated area of the National Park Service (NPS). Legislation introduced by U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) cleared the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee this week, moving it toward a vote in the full Senate before the end of the 118th Congress.
The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians and Jefferson College Affiliated Areas Establishment Act (S.3241), if passed, would connect the Grand Village to the Natchez National Historical Park, enabling access to preservation, protection, and interpretive resources from the NPS.
“The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians and Historical Jefferson College showcase the rich history of Natchez and the roles these places played in the story of the Natchez Indians and the founding of Mississippi,” said Hyde-Smith. “I am committed to working with my colleagues to ensure this legislation becomes law.”
While the Grand Village meets the criteria for affiliation, the bill was amended to require additional review of Jefferson College’s eligibility. A reconnaissance study by the NPS determined the site currently does not meet the necessary criteria for affiliation. Hyde-Smith, however, remains steadfast in her efforts to include Jefferson College.
“Jefferson College was a location of a Freedman’s Bureau and played a significant role in helping former slaves transition out of slavery by providing educational opportunities,” Hyde-Smith said. “There is still so much to uncover and share about this site, and I am committed to working with the Park Service to achieve recognition for its historical importance.”
Hyde-Smith has championed S.3241 since its introduction in November 2023, advocating for its passage during a National Parks Subcommittee hearing earlier this year.
In addition to the Grand Village and Jefferson College measure, the committee also considered other legislation, including a bill authorizing the transfer of two parcels of land from the NPS to the State of Mississippi for a new welcome center and interpretive museum at the Vicksburg National Military Park.
If passed, the legislation would solidify the Grand Village’s status as a key part of the Natchez story, enhancing its preservation for future generations.
