NATCHEZ — Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson said the long-awaited study of traffic in downtown Natchez will be presented to the public at Tuesday’s meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen.
The traffic study became a top of discussion at last week’s city meeting when Ward 4 Alderman Felicia Bridgewater-Irving asked about its status.
Gibson said Thursday that the consultant with TSW Design who conducted the study, Bert Kuyrkendall, will be at the meeting Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Council Chambers, 115 S Pearl St., to make the presentation and answer questions from Aldermen.
In October 2024, the city approved spending $39,000 on Volkert Engineering’s study of traffic on Main and Franklin streets. However, shortly thereafter, Downtown Natchez Alliance officials informed the city of a company that would perform what appeared to be a broader study for $10,000 less.
The city then approved hiring TSW Design to perform the study for $29,320.
The results of that study were presented to individual aldermen and the mayor and at an October meeting of the Downtown Merchants Association, after which the study seems to have disappeared.
The traffic study recommends radical changes to downtown traffic, including removing traffic lights, replacing them with all-way stops, and moving from one-way to two-way traffic on Main and Franklin streets.
“Some who have looked at the study have indicated some concern with some of the recommendations,” Gibson said. “Change is a hard thing…I received a lot of calls from members of our community and I am not getting a real warm and fuzzy feeling about moving forward.”
He said the study is “very low on the totem pole for me.”
