Residents near Magee experienced more than severe weather on Saturday when a minor earthquake struck the area.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 3.0-magnitude earthquake approximately 5.6 miles east northeast of Magee at around 1:49 p.m. The quake was recorded at a depth of about 6.5 miles underground.
John Kilpatrick, director of the Simpson County Emergency Management Agency, commented on the incident, stating, “That’s what we’re hearing. Nobody has felt it. We’ve gotten no reports of damage or anything.”
This earthquake in Magee was one of five reported across the United States on Saturday. The other tremors occurred in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California; Glen Elder, Kansas; and Stanton, Texas.
The last recorded earthquake in Mississippi took place in November, registering as a 2.5-magnitude quake in Madison County.
