The City of Natchez, through its Workforce Development Department, has officially launched the Building Trades Electrical Program at Copiah-Lincoln Community College’s Natchez Campus. This program aims to address the increasing demand for skilled electricians by offering accessible, high-quality training for residents interested in careers within the electrical trades.
The program kicked off on March 3, 2025, the program comprises five 8-week sessions extending through December 30, 2025. Classes are conveniently scheduled in both morning (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM) and evening (5:30 PM – 8:30 PM) slots, Monday through Thursday, accommodating diverse schedules. The first cohort proudly welcomed 27 students.
A significant feature of the program is its commitment to representation, particularly focusing on promoting and supporting women in construction roles. By emphasizing inclusivity, the initiative aims to ensure that the workforce mirrors the rich diversity and talent inherent in the Natchez community.
“The Building Trades Electrical Program results directly from collaboration among our department, local employers, and community partners,” said Tuwanna N. Williams, Director of Natchez Workforce Development. “Given the growing demand for skilled trade professionals, we’re proud to launch an initiative that not only provides training but also uplifts our community. This marks just the beginning—we’re eager to soon expand into plumbing, construction, and masonry.”
The program’s establishment has been greatly supported through partnerships with Delta Regional Authority (DRA), BuildMississippi, and Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Funding from DRA ensures the program remains free to participants, removing financial barriers and opening avenues for career advancement within the skilled trades.
Natchez Mayor Dan M. Gibson expressed his enthusiasm for this development: “We’re thrilled to receive this additional support for Natchez. Our workforce development initiatives are gaining momentum, propelling our city forward. With DRA’s continued backing, we’re building lasting success for our community.”
Participants will earn multiple certifications from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), providing valuable credentials that improve job prospects. Plans are already underway to introduce additional programs in plumbing, construction, and masonry.
