NATCHEZ, Miss. – Long-serving Adams County Coroner James Lee announced Monday he’s retiring next week after serving 25 years in that elected post.
The county board appointed his deputy, Rosa Newman, to take his place as the chief examiner investigating causes of death.
“It’s my time to go. . . . I’m moving on,” said Lee, who was first elected in 1999 and went on to be re-elected six more times with little or no opposition.
“I appreciate so much the residents of the city and county who supported me over these years,” Lee said as he met with the Adams County Board of Supervisors.
“It’s not an easy job,” Supervisor Wes Middleton told Lee as he joined other board members in praising the veteran death investigator for his work that often involves grisly murders and accidental fatalities.
“We appreciate your service,” said board President Kevin Wilson.
Lee recommended Newman be appointed as his replacement effective next Monday. She’s been his deputy since Lee was first elected in 1999, when he defeated longtime coroner Hugh Tedder.
Newman is to serve out the remainder of the current term through 2027, when the next scheduled county election is to be held.
