VIDALIA, LA – May 26, 2025 — In a move to safeguard local communities and ecosystems, the Concordia Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP), in collaboration with the Concordia Parish Police Jury, the Lake Concordia Commission, and the Lake St. John Commission, has issued an immediate No Wake Zone for Lake Concordia and Lake St. John. This measure will remain in effect until further notice.
Why the No Wake Zone Was Declared
The declaration comes in response to recently elevated water levels in both lakes, which pose several pressing risks:
-
Shoreline Erosion and Property Damage: High water has made shorelines more vulnerable, and boat wakes can accelerate erosion and inflict damage on private and public properties alike.
-
Flood Risk Mitigation: Boat-generated waves can worsen flooding conditions, especially around homes, piers, and retaining walls already stressed by rising waters.
-
Public Safety Concerns: Lower speeds and minimal wave activity reduce the risk of boating accidents and injuries during high-water conditions.
What the No Wake Zone Means for Boaters
All watercraft on Lake Concordia and Lake St. John must now operate at idle speed, creating no wake under any circumstances. The Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office will actively patrol the lakes to enforce the order, and violations may result in penalties.
Looking Ahead
The No Wake Zone will remain in place until further notice, with updates issued as water levels and environmental conditions improve. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed through local channels and OHSEP communications.
For questions or concerns, the public can contact the Concordia Parish OHSEP office at 318-414-1678 or via email at oep@conppj.org.
