Mississippi’s annual Sales Tax Holiday returns this summer, giving families and bargain-hunters a chance to stretch their back-to-school budgets. From Friday, July 11, through Sunday, July 13, 2025, qualifying purchases of clothing, footwear, and school supplies will be exempt from state sales tax, as long as the price of each individual item is under $100.
What qualifies?
-
Clothing – shirts, pants, jackets, uniforms, etc.
-
Footwear – sneakers, dress shoes, boots, and similar items.
-
School supplies – notebooks, crayons, backpacks, binders, and other classroom essentials.
Remember: the exemption applies per item, not to the total bill. For example, you could buy three pairs of shoes at $99 each and pay no sales tax, but a single pair priced at $100.01 would be fully taxable.
Online, Phone, and Mail Orders
Tax savings aren’t limited to in-store shopping. Eligible items ordered by mail, telephone, or the internet also qualify, provided the order is placed and paid for during the holiday and each item’s price is below the $100 threshold.
Shipping & Handling: These charges do not count toward the item’s price when determining whether it exceeds $100. So a $98 backpack with a $15 shipping fee is still exempt.
Tips for making the most of the holiday
-
Plan your list early. Inventory last year’s supplies and measure growing kids’ sizes so you can shop efficiently.
-
Watch price tags. If an item rings up at $100 or more, the tax kicks back in.
-
Shop local. Small businesses across Mississippi often pair the holiday with their own promotions.
Mark the dates, set a budget, and enjoy a tax-free head start on the upcoming school year.
