The LSU Tigers football program has formally informed head coach Brian Kelly that the university intends to dismiss him, sources told ESPN.
A meeting with the team is expected later tonight to let the team know, as discussions over Kelly’s exit and contract obligations remain in flux.
Kelly, 64, took over at LSU in late 2021. His tenure has included solid overall numbers — a 34-14 record over four seasons, winning just under 71 % of games.
He also guided the Tigers to an SEC West title in his first year and coached Heisman-winning quarterback Jayden Daniels in 2023.
Despite these accomplishments, the program has shown significant decline in recent games. LSU entered this week ranked 82nd in scoring offense, 96th in total offense and 122nd in passing offense. Their defense has also faltered, including a blowout home loss to the Texas A&M Aggies during which the road team scored 35 straight points in the second half. Fans even chanted “Fire Kelly” at Tiger Stadium.
A major point in the ongoing discussion is Kelly’s contract: he signed a 10-year deal when he moved from Notre Dame Fighting Irish to LSU in November 2021. The deal was reported as worth $95 million, 90 % of which was guaranteed.
Under that contract, Kelly is owed just over $54 million in buyout should LSU proceed with his dismissal.
That amount may be offset if Kelly takes another coaching job.
Looking ahead, the coaching search will be closely watched. Who will be the new head coach of the LSU Tigers?
