Investigators are examining the cause of a fire that broke out yesterday at Building 9 of the Tara Apartments in Natchez. Bystanders reported that all residents of the building’s eight units were able to exit safely. As of 11:30 a.m. yesterday, the building’s attic was reported to be almost completely destroyed. The structure is located at the back of the complex behind Magnolia Village off Highland Boulevard. The Red Cross is assisting residents who were displaced by the fire.
Louisiana has become the first state in the nation approved to receive nearly $1.36 billion in federal funding to expand broadband internet access. According to the executive director of Connect LA, the funding will support efforts to ensure reliable, cost‑effective, high‑speed internet access statewide. Approximately 130,000 households, small businesses, and community anchor institutions remain without adequate access, primarily in rural and hard‑to‑reach areas. Three former employees of a Christian school in Lake Charles are under arrest for allegedly covering up sexual assaults involving football players at Hamilton Christian High School. Authorities report that some older players were sexually assaulting younger teammates as part of a team ritual. The parish sheriff stated that the school’s principal and an assistant coach were aware of the incidents and failed to report them, despite being mandatory reporters. Both are being held on bonds exceeding one million dollars each. A school cook was also arrested for allegedly sending threatening messages related to the investigation.
