The deadline is approaching for Mississippi residents to apply for the Statewide Residential Safe Room Grant Lottery Program, which offers up to $3,500 to help homeowners install a FEMA-compliant storm shelter or safe room. Following the case of a 14-year-old Livingston Parish girl charged with killing her newborn, officials are reminding the public about Louisiana’s Safe Haven Law. The law allows a mother to surrender a baby up to 60 days old at designated locations with no questions asked. Accepted locations include any Louisiana hospital, staffed fire station, or staffed law enforcement station. In South Louisiana, two Safe Haven drop-off boxes are also available. These climate-controlled boxes alert first responders immediately when a baby is placed inside.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol will begin its 2025 Thanksgiving holiday travel period at 5 p.m. today, continuing through Sunday at midnight. Troopers plan to conduct high-visibility patrols aimed at reducing speeding and distracted driving. Safety checkpoints will be used to enforce restraint laws and identify impaired drivers. During the 2024 Thanksgiving travel period, the agency investigated 187 crashes that resulted in two fatalities and made 80 DUI arrests on state and federal highways.
A flight instructor and her student are presumed dead after their Cessna aircraft crashed into Lake Pontchartrain Monday night. According to the owner of Apollo Flight School, there was no distress call before the crash, and early search efforts indicated the impact was not survivable. Both individuals on board were described as well-liked, and the instructor was noted for her qualifications and reputation.
