Natchez firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out in the ceiling of the Mark Hall paper plant on Mahorka Road. The facility manufactures paper products including paper towels and toilet tissue. Crews responded around 9 a.m. yesterday and quickly extinguished the flames. No injuries were reported.
Louisiana will participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade for the third consecutive year. The state’s float, titled Gulf to Gumbo, will appear in Pasadena, California, and features a pelican chef stirring a pot of gumbo. The float is designed to promote Louisiana tourism as well as products from the state’s waters and agricultural fields. Among the riders will be Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain.
A new March of Dimes report shows Mississippi continues to rank poorly in maternal and infant health outcomes. The organization again gave the United States a D-plus grade overall, with New Hampshire being the only state to receive an A. Mississippi was among eight states receiving a failing grade and recorded the nation’s highest preterm birth rate at 15 percent.
Paul Hollis, a former Louisiana state lawmaker and Board of Elementary and Secondary Education member, has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the new director of the U.S. Mint. Hollis developed an early interest in coin collecting after receiving a peace dollar from his grandmother at age seven. The U.S. Mint produces coins including nickels, dimes, and quarters, and plans to issue special coins in 2026 to commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday. Hollis hopes the anniversary coins will inspire more people to take up coin collecting.
