Adams County supervisors have approved a contract for the construction of new public restrooms at Chester Willis Baseball Stadium in Liberty Park. Phoenix Construction Company was awarded the project at a cost of $243,000. Additional work is required for sewer connections, which are budgeted at about $13,000. The facilities are planned for completion before the spring baseball season. The baseball venue underwent more than $2 million in renovations in 2024.
A recent audit of New Orleans–area restaurants found that nearly one-third of establishments visited on the west bank were serving imported shrimp while advertising it as Louisiana shrimp. The testing was conducted by Seed Consulting. Louisiana law requires restaurants to clearly indicate when shrimp is imported, and violations can result in fines of up to $2,000. Marrero State Senator Pat Connick said the issue reflects a lack of enforcement of legislation that took effect one year ago.
Mississippi authorities report that six people were killed Friday night in a series of shootings across three locations in a rural area. The victims included the suspect’s father, brother, uncle, seven-year-old cousin, a church pastor, and the pastor’s brother. The suspect, 24-year-old Derica M. Moore, was arrested at a police roadblock in Cedar Bluff shortly before midnight. He is being held without bail at the Clay County Jail in West Point on murder charges and is expected to make an initial court appearance today. Clay County District Attorney Scott Cullum told the Associated Press that he expects to seek the death penalty and that Moore will likely be appointed a public defender.
New Orleans is swearing in a new mayor this morning as Helena Moreno takes office. Outgoing Mayor LaToya Cantrell leaves after a second term marked by multiple controversies. University of New Orleans political science professor Ed Shervenec said many residents see Moreno’s administration as a reset and expect new energy and urgency in city leadership. Moreno will face a $222 million budget deficit and is expected to focus quickly on improving city government operations.
