The Adams County safe room remains open through today for residents who need shelter. Individuals using the facility should bring food, drinks, medications, blankets, and other essential items. The safe room is located at 323 Liberty Road in Natchez. For updates on closures, shelters, and safety information, residents can text the word WINTER to 601-445-9500.
Volunteers with the United Cajun Navy delivered supplies to warming shelters across North Louisiana and North Mississippi. Items provided included snacks, baby supplies, blankets, scarves, and gloves, along with toys for children. The organization’s founder noted that families often leave home quickly before roads become impassable and may forget essential items. A fourth weather-related death has been reported in Mississippi, according to Governor Tate Reeves. The latest fatality occurred in Leflore County. Previous deaths were reported in Alcorn, Hinds, and Tishomingo counties. Reeves also reported that approximately 143,700 customers remain without power in the state, down from a peak of about 180,000.
The Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed five additional deaths linked to the winter storm, bringing the statewide total to eight. Five victims died from hypothermia. An elderly person in DeSoto Parish died from carbon monoxide poisoning, and another 79-year-old woman in the same parish died when her oxygen concentrator failed due to a power outage. A Texas man also died while traveling on icy roads in Mansfield.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry urged North Louisiana residents to stay off the roads and seek warming shelters if they are without electricity or heat. Landry spoke in Monroe after surveying damage from the ice storm in Ouachita Parish. More than 90,000 utility customers in Louisiana remain without power.
