Adams County supervisors said they want to reduce property taxes after substantial increases for property owners over the past year. The Board of Supervisors is preparing the county budget and property tax rates for adoption in September. During a meeting yesterday, it heard objections and concerns from landowners regarding their assessed property values and the taxes they are expected to pay in the coming year.
Complaints have included concerns about property tax increases of 25% or more tied to the tax bills received this year by some residents in Natchez and Adams County.
In Richland Parish, three groups say they will challenge Entergy Louisiana’s proposal to build seven new gas plants for Meta’s new AI data center. Entergy CEO Philip May recently shared a letter that says Meta has embraced a ratepayer protection pledge and will pay the full cost of required infrastructure for the data center. A senior attorney at Earthjustice, Susan Stevens Miller, said the pledge does not have legal standing and that enforcement would be limited if the promise is not kept.
The groups also cited Governor Landry’s “lightning speed” initiative, saying it would make public participation and careful regulatory review more difficult.
In Jackson, Mississippi, lawmakers met Monday to discuss redistricting after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that race cannot be the primary factor in drawing election maps. House and Senate leadership selected 10 members from each chamber to serve on the redistricting committee. The committee plans to travel across the state to hear from communities, and any new maps would require passage by both chambers.
In Louisiana, State Farm is issuing $136 million in dividends to policyholders. State Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple said the dividends are issued when insurance companies take in more money than they pay out in claims. He also pointed to safety features in modern vehicles—such as sensors and automatic braking—as factors that can reduce accidents and, in turn, reduce claims. Eligible policyholders were advised to watch for an email from State Farm or a check in the mail. The average payment is expected to be about $138 per vehicle, and policyholders must have held their policy before December 31, 2025.
