Vidalia has approved a $1 million project to make the Challenger field wheelchair accessible. The town said hydroelectric revenue will power the project. Vidalia’s shortlist of other funding options also includes utility rebates and funding for a festival.
Election Day is 50 days away. Due to last-minute redistricting, U.S. House races on the November 3 ballot will use open primaries.
Louisiana v. Calais was cited as the reason for the changes to how the congressional primaries will work. Public service announcements were described as important for informing voters about the updated election process. The broadcast also stated that, despite all candidates of all parties appearing on the same ballot for congressional races, there is not an expectation that many voters will cross party lines.
Mississippi sweet potato officials reported that hot, dry weather has been a challenge in some crop areas, but the sweet potato crop largely received rain at key times. State officials said farmers planted about 35,800 acres of sweet potatoes, an increase of nearly 10%. Officials attributed improved early establishment in part to farmers getting into fields in late April and using cooler temperatures to help plants take hold before summer heat.
The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating its first quadruple homicide. Lieutenant Blake Tabor said investigators first learned of the killings when a juvenile survivor of a stabbing attack went to a neighbor for help. When deputies arrived, they found two people stabbed to death in a home in Houma and two more people stabbed to death inside a trailer camper on the property.
Kagan Soule, 47, was taken into custody. A motive has not been released, and investigators said Soule knew his victims.
