The U.S. Coast Guard and other authorities responded Sunday night (April 27) after a collision between two vessels near mile marker 110 on the Lower Mississippi River caused six barges to break free—one of which sank. The incident temporarily closed river traffic between mile markers 108 and 111 while recovery operations took place.
The sunken barge was carrying urea, a fertilizer-related material, but officials report no injuries or environmental damage. The river has since reopened with restrictions.
