Natchez, MS – Despite the cancellation of this year’s Relay for Life event due to incoming weather, Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten and his team are pushing forward with a heartfelt mission: raising funds for the fight against cancer.
The Relay for Life event, a cherished community gathering in support of cancer awareness and research, was set to take place today. Sheriff Patten shared his personal disappointment in a Facebook video, noting that the cause is deeply meaningful to him after the loss of his own mother to cancer.
“Just because the event is canceled doesn’t mean we’re going to cancel what we’re doing,” said Patten. “We ordered a lot of seafood—shrimp, crab legs, and more—to sell at this event, and we’ve decided we’re going to sell it anyway.”
The sheriff’s office, located at 306 State Street in Natchez, has transformed into a pop-up seafood boil station. Massive cookers and boilers are being fired up, and tents are going up as deputies and volunteers prepare seafood pot bags for the community. Each bag includes a generous mix of shrimp, crab legs, corn, sausage, onions, and other flavorful ingredients.
Sales are expected to begin around noon and will continue until close of business today or until the weather no longer permits.
Patten emphasized that the proceeds from the seafood sales will still go to Relay for Life, despite the cancellation of the physical event.
“We’ve lost a lot of friends, family, and loved ones—right here in the sheriff’s office and throughout the community,” he said. “We won’t cancel raising the money.”
He encouraged all residents of Natchez and surrounding areas to stop by, grab a meal, and support the cause. “It’s going to be good,” he added. “We’re doing this in the spirit of Relay for Life, and we hope you’ll join us.”
For those looking to contribute and enjoy a hearty meal for a great cause, head over to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office today and support the ongoing fight against cancer, rain or shine.
