BATON ROUGE – AAA predicts nearly 40 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend. Spokesperson Don Redman says people are ready to hit the road at levels we haven’t seen in five years.
“We’re overall looking at an 8% increase in people traveling for the holiday this year versus last year, and certainly higher than 2020 which you almost have to ignore,” said Redman.
Redman says despite record gas prices, about 35-million Americans will use the highways to get to their Memorial Day weekend destination.
“People are determined to travel and typically Memorial Day is a harbinger of what to expect for summer travels,” said Redman.
Air travel has picked up as well, with three million passengers expected to take flight over the weekend, representing 7.7 percent of all travelers. Redman says that figure tops 2019, the last year prior to the pandemic.
“Absolutely seeing a rebound in the airline industry, people choosing to fly rather than drive right now,” said Redman.
AAA says based on booking data, Orlando, Florida, Seattle, Washington, Miami, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada and Anaheim, California are the top U.S. Destinations.
