OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man is in custody accused in the disappearance of a college student last seen July 8.
Sheldon Timothy Herrington Jr., 22, of Grenada, was arrested on a charge of murder in the case involving Jimmie “Jay” Lee, a 20-year-old University of Mississippi student. Oxford Police and the University of Mississippi Police announced his arrest Friday, two weeks after Lee was last seen leaving an apartment complex, news outlets reported. Lee’s vehicle was towed from another apartment complex later July 8. Police believe he may have been visiting someone there at the time of his disappearance. The vehicle was taken to the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory for processing.
Herrington is being held without bond. Authorities have not released details on what led to Herrington’s arrest.
Attorney Carlos Moore and Kevin Horan have been retained to represent Herrington, The Oxford Eagle reported. Moore is the managing partner of The Cochran Firm – Mississippi Delta located in Grenada.
“Although he has been charged with a serious crime he is presumed innocent. We will vigorously defend him and look forward to clearing his good name,” Moore confirmed in a social media statement.
Federal and local law enforcement agencies, meanwhile, are working to locate Lee or his body. Lee’s family is offering a $5,000 reward and the Lafayette County CrimeStoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that will lead to his being found.
