Early Saturday on Liberty Road, a driver swerved to avoid a deer in the roadway and crashed. The driver was not injured, no passengers were in the vehicle, and no other cars were involved.
Hurricane season ended yesterday, marking the first season since 2015 in which no hurricanes made landfall in the United States. The season produced 13 named storms, including five hurricanes. Three of those hurricanes reached Category 5 strength, the second-highest number on record. Although the total number of storms was below average, the overall season is considered above average due to the intensity of the storms that formed.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation issued a reminder for motorists transporting Christmas trees to properly secure their loads. A 2019 AAA study reported that unsecured road debris caused more than 200,000 crashes, 19,000 injuries, and over 500 deaths during a four‑year period. Another study found that one in five buyers of real Christmas trees had previously experienced a tree falling off their vehicle before arriving home.
For the first time, the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola hosted a Daddy‑Daughter Dance. Twenty‑nine incarcerated fathers wore tuxedos and spent time with their daughters, including some who had not seen their children in years and others meeting for the first time.
