The Mississippi State Board of Education has placed the Wilkinson County School District into district of transformation status due to serious academic deficiencies. According to state education officials, the district has demonstrated an inability to provide students with an adequate and stable education. Under the district of transformation designation, the district becomes state‑led and will operate under the supervision of the Mississippi Department of Education and the State Board of Education.
The decision follows years of persistently poor academic performance. Wilkinson County has received an F rating for two consecutive years, and half of its schools currently hold F ratings. It is the only district in Mississippi with an F rating for two straight years, making it the state’s lowest‑performing district.
U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy says he will continue to seek re‑election despite former President Donald Trump endorsing Congresswoman Julia Letlow in the U.S. Senate race. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says the endorsement is a setback for Cassidy but does not eliminate his chances in the Republican primary. He noted that Trump endorsed Republican Eddie Rispone in the 2019 governor’s race, but Rispone did not win against John Bel Edwards. Letlow has not announced whether she will run for Senate, though speculation suggests an announcement could come during Washington, D.C.’s Mardi Gras events at the end of the month.

The apology acknowledged the harm Watkins suffered at age 13 when he was wrongfully arrested in Jackson during the civil rights movement and sent to Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. Watkins was arrested at the Greyhound bus station in 1961 and held on death row alongside adults despite being a child.
