All city and county offices in Adams County are reopening today. The Adams County Courthouse will reopen at 1 p.m. The Adams County Safe Room will remain open through Wednesday for residents who need shelter. Individuals using the safe room should bring their own food, drinks, medications, blankets, and other essential items. The safe room is located at 323 Liberty Road in Natchez. More than 100,000 people in Louisiana remain without power following the historic ice storm. Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell reports widespread damage in north Louisiana, with numerous power lines and poles down due to heavy ice. Entergy estimates that 90 percent of customers in areas with favorable access along the I-20 corridor will have power restored by Wednesday night. Customers in harder-to-access locations may experience outages until Thursday night. Campbell says utility crews are working to restore service as quickly as possible.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves has announced that the Mississippi National Guard will be deployed to support winter storm recovery efforts across the state. Up to 500 soldiers will be deployed initially. They are expected to begin deployment today and be fully operational by tomorrow. Additional guardsmen may be deployed if needed. Two deaths related to the storm have been reported—one in Hinds County and one in Tishomingo County. One injury has been reported in Hinds County and another in Smith County. Damage and impacts from the storm have been reported in 47 counties and by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Fourteen residential homes have reported major damage, while three have reported minor damage.
The American Red Cross is issuing a statewide call for volunteers in Louisiana. The organization is supporting shelters and warming centers and may need to open additional locations. Volunteers may be asked to stay overnight with clients, help deliver supplies, water, and blankets, or assist in preparing vehicles.
