A new WalletHub report shows Mississippi ranks first in the nation for the share of family income spent on groceries. Nationally, grocery prices have risen nearly 30 percent since 2019, with many items doubling or tripling in price. WalletHub found that groceries continue to take up the largest portion of household budgets in Mississippi for the second consecutive year. Although the state reduced its grocery tax from 7 percent to 5 percent in July 2025, the share of income spent on groceries did not decrease proportionally. WalletHub attributes this to an approximate 4 percent nationwide increase in grocery prices over the past year.

Additional candidates in the race include Democrat Jim Long and Republican Randall Arrington.
