A developer planning a retail center near the Natchez Walmart has been given another year to decide whether to purchase city-owned land for the project. Horn Properties of Tennessee has been working for two years on plans for a shopping center on the 30-acre tract that previously housed the Veterans of Foreign Wars post across from Natchez High School. The Natchez Board of Aldermen voted this week to extend the company’s contract option for an additional year. The potential purchase depends on resolving several issues, including ensuring adequate access from Sergeant Prentiss Drive to the proposed site adjacent to Walmart.
The West Carroll Gazette will continue operating after concerns that the 116-year-old newspaper would publish its final edition this week. Louisiana State Newspapers had announced the closure, prompting worry among readers and community members. Following discussions within the West Carroll Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber voted to purchase the weekly newspaper. Supporters say readers are pleased the publication will remain in operation.
The Mississippi Insurance Department reports that State Farm’s board of directors has approved a cashback dividend for eligible private passenger auto policies. Policyholders in Mississippi with active policies as of December 31 will receive a portion of more than $70.5 million, averaging about $124 per vehicle. Nationally, State Farm Mutual has announced $5 billion in cashback for auto customers. Payments are expected to begin this summer.
The Public Service Commission will conduct an audit of Delta Utilities’ billing and costs after customers in Baton Rouge and New Orleans reported unusually high gas bills. Community leaders in South Baton Rouge say the rising costs are forcing some families to choose between basic necessities. Delta Utilities attributes the higher bills to increased demand and a 160 percent rise in natural gas costs between September 2025 and February 2026. The company says customers struggling to pay can request a payment plan.
