NATCHEZ, Miss. — Adams County’s emergency management director is running for state agriculture commissioner.
Brad Bradford’s campaign boasts of his extensive background in agriculture, which includes growing up on a Humphreys County farm, having a degree in agronomy from Alcorn State University and being a small-farm consultant.
Bradford “is no stranger to the agricultural industry. He was reared in the Mississippi Delta on his family farm in Isola and gained firsthand experience in operating a healthy farm,” states Bradford’s campaign website. “Brad is a fourth-generation farmer with valuable knowledge and skills that have allowed him to serve communities throughout his career.”
Bradford, a retired U.S. Army Reserves major, was appointed Adams County emergency management director in 2014 by the county Board of Supervisors.
He is running as a Democrat.
Current Agriculture and Commerce Commissioner Andy Gipson is a Republican who took office in 2018, when the governor appointed him to replace Cindy Hyde-Smith as she became a U.S. senator. Gipson was elected in 2019 to his current term and is seeking re-election.
Bradford graduated from Alcorn State in 1997, joined the U.S. Army and retired in 2016 as an Army Reserves major.
As Adams County emergency management director, Bradford has administered the community’s response to the COVID pandemic, weather-related disasters and various homeland security affairs
As agriculture commissioner, Bradford would “promote all Mississippi farmers, ranchers, growers and producers, provide consistent leadership, protect consumers and create opportunities for all Mississippians seeking agricultural opportunities,” according to his campaign platform.
Wednesday was the deadline for candidates to file for Mississippi’s upcoming elections.
Bradford faces two other Democrats also running for agriculture commissioner: Robert Briggs of Jackson and Bethany Hill of Dumas. The party primaries are in August. The winner will face the Republican nominee in the November general election.
