In Louisiana, Attorney General Liz Murrow criticized the now-dismissed indictment previously issued against her by an Orleans Parish grand jury. Murrow had been indicted on 16 counts related to letters she sent to New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno and other elected officials regarding their support for a special Clerk of Court election. She said the actions taken against her constituted a misuse of the criminal justice system and stated she intends to pursue the matter further.
An independent preliminary autopsy found the manner and cause of death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells to be undetermined pending further investigation. The findings were released during the NAACP national convention in Chicago by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family. Wells disappeared July 4 during a boat trip with friends to Horn Island off the Mississippi coast and did not return with the group. His body was found two days later. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office has completed its own autopsy but has not yet released results.
Tropical Storm Bertha continues moving west along the Louisiana coast after making landfall in St. Bernard Parish. Impacts have remained minimal. According to State Climatologist Jay Grimes, wind shear and dry air are keeping heavier rainfall south of the storm’s center. Bertha is expected to weaken as it moves inland but may maintain tropical storm strength through the afternoon.
The Mississippi River at Natchez-Vidalia stands at 34.64 feet and is falling.
